About Genna

Genna was raised in Chicago with a background in jazz and rock, but moved to LA to attend USC in 2011. There she spent several years studying bass with Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santana, Phil Collins) and graduated with a degree in Popular Music. Since then, she has performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers, played live for audiences as large as 10,000 people, and toured internationally in over 15 countries. When the pandemic shut down live music, she pivoted to virtual session work, private lessons, on-camera instruction for the Fender Play app, and bass content on TikTok that has amassed her over 19K followers. Genna has a passion for teaching and loves to show students how fundamentals like scales and left hand techniques can be applied to the more creative aspects of music, making basics fun!

Common Questions

  • Are you comfortable teaching all age ranges?

Yes! I have experience teaching ages as young as 5 all the way through adults.

  • Do you specialize in any particular styles?

Most artists I tour with fall under rock, pop, or folk/Americana, but I have experience playing all genres! I've performed jazz, funk, and even metal and musical theater.

  • What things do you focus on most when teaching?

I focus on applying fundamental skills like scales and left hand/right hand techniques to the more creative aspects of bass playing. If you’ve ever felt like you wanted to skip the basics because you weren’t taught how to use them, I hope to change that! I promise that writing your own bass lines, learning your favorite songs by ear, and jamming with a band will become way more fun once you know how to apply the essentials, and will open up a world of possibilities. I also like to share tour stories and my own real-world gigging experience to show you how I apply all of these skills as a working musician. I’m here for any and all questions you have!

  • Do you teach acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass or ukulele?

    Bass
