Common Questions
What things do you focus on most when teaching?
When teaching, I focus most on whether there is a harmonious balance of challenge and enjoyment. I fully understand that many learners aspire more than anything to foster enjoyment on the instrument and I believe that comes from a steady pace of improvement taking place in manageable increments. I’m always listening and looking for ways to improve fundamentals; a student’s sense of rhythm or their general technique. But most importantly I try to encourage an approach that makes our sessions, and the practice time in between, something to look forward to and not be overwhelmed by.
Do you specialize in any particular styles?
With my training as a Studio Guitarist, I have spent time studying many styles of music. However there are a few styles and techniques I would call specialties or areas of expertise. I grew up listening to and absorbing Classic Rock Guitar. The touches of Brian May, David Gilmore, Kurt Cobain, and other luminaries are etched in every note I play. That was the first style of guitar I fell in love with. Going to music school led me to study Jazz guitar, and to this day I consider it to be a bedrock of my playing no matter what style I’m called to play. All of my lead guitar chops are informed by the combination of my specialty in Classic Rock and Jazz. There are certain techniques and approaches to the guitar that I also consider myself to be in the realm of my expertise. I wouldn’t be where I am in my career today without my considerable time spent perfecting rhythm guitar. Seemingly so many aspiring guitarists (understandably) want to elevate their skills as lead/solo players, but the role of guitar in so many songs or bands is to be a rhythm player. Whether it’s strumming boom-chick style country acoustic, or spanky Nile Rogers style funk, I am an expert rhythm guitar player. I file my nearly 15 years of Electric Bass playing experience in this category as well. Lastly, I want to highlight my specialty as a vocalist who can play guitar or bass while singing. Many students have come to me over the years asking how they can improve as singers who play guitar. I liken the process to patting your head and rubbing your belly; it takes a great deal of coordination and patience, and it’s an area where I excel at helping students improve.
