Racing Tips in 60 Seconds: Overtaking In Low HP Cars

Chris Nunes

Car Racing

Keeping your momentum up is key to overtaking successfully in a low horsepower car.

When beginning the execution of your pass, keep your eyes forward and fixated on where the track is open and use your reference points for your brake zone. Dont let the driver you're overtaking back up your corner!

What Do We Change In Our Overtaking With Lower HP Cars?

It's important to prioritize your minimum rolling speed over where you apply throttle when you're racing a lower HP car like a Spec Miata.

The over under overtaking move is less effective with lower horsepower cars because you don't have the torque to really pull you out of the corner. Make sure once you initiate a pass, follow through with it. If you hesitate that extra second delay can result in contact or the opening no longer being there.

You'll find outside passes like the one in the video above are slightly more effective in lower horsepower cars, but we still want to try and pass on the inside when possible!
