Today, we’re focusing on an essential aspect of live guitar playing - building your set list. Whether you’re preparing for a small gig, an open mic, or a full concert, having a well-thought-out set list is crucial. Here’s how to create a set list that keeps you and your audience engaged.

Understanding the Set List

A set list is simply a list of songs you plan to perform. For a half-hour set, aim for eight to nine songs. This allows for tuning, guitar changes, and some interaction with the audience. If your set is longer, adjust accordingly. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • 8-9 songs: Approximately 30 minutes
  • 16-18 songs: Approximately 1 hour
  • 1-3 songs: Suitable for an open mic

Choosing Your Songs

Selecting songs can be daunting, especially if you need to fill a longer set. Here are some tips:

  • Mix It Up: Choose a variety of songs that showcase different styles and tempos.
  • Energy Levels: Start with high-energy songs to grab attention, then mix in slower songs for variety.
  • Familiar Tunes: Include songs that the audience might know and sing along with.
  • Balance Your Repertoire: Avoid clustering too many similar songs together. If you have several bar chord-heavy songs, space them out to avoid hand fatigue.

Practice Your Set List

Once you’ve selected your songs, practice them in the order you plan to perform. This helps you:

  • Build Stamina: Ensure you can play through the set without burning out.
  • Identify Transitions: Smooth out any awkward transitions between songs.
  • Refine Your Performance: Fine-tune your playing to keep the set dynamic and engaging.

Consider Song Order

The order of songs is critical for maintaining energy and audience interest. Here’s how to think about it:

  • Start Strong: Open with an upbeat song to capture attention.
  • Mid-Set Dynamics: Mix in slower songs or ballads midway to give yourself and the audience a breather.
  • End with a Bang: Close with high-energy songs to leave a lasting impression.

Diverse Keys and Styles

Avoid playing too many songs in the same key back-to-back. This keeps the sound fresh and interesting. For example:

  • Key Variety: Alternate between songs in different keys (e.g., G, D, A) to keep things dynamic.
  • Genre Mixing: If appropriate, blend different genres (e.g., classic rock, pop, 60s, 70s) to showcase your versatility.

Audience Engagement

Remember, performing live is about entertaining your audience. Here are some tips:

  • Interaction: Talk to your audience between songs, introduce the next song, or share a quick story.
  • Sing-Alongs: Include well-known songs that encourage the audience to sing along.
  • Visuals: Keep your stage presence engaging. Move around, make eye contact, and enjoy yourself.

Building a set list is an art form that balances your strengths as a guitarist with the need to entertain your audience. By carefully selecting and practicing your songs, considering the order, and engaging with your audience, you can create a memorable performance that showcases your guitar-playing skills and keeps everyone entertained.

Happy playing, and may your next performance be a hit!
