The day is coming up quick, tryouts! You may be trying out for a new team or an entirely new club. Either way, you might be excited or nervous,😰 or both.
You’ve spent a few weeks training, working on your individual skills, and playing pick-up games with friends. But what do you do now that tryouts are the next day?!?⚽
This week, Blayze pro soccer coach Mike Semenza brings you his tips to help you prepare for soccer tryouts.
Get Enough Rest😴
Many soccer players forget that rest is just as important as training. Make sure you are getting enough sleep every night, especially the night before the tryout. It is also essential to take rest days. This allows your body to recover and avoid injuries.
Eat Well🍒🍇
What you eat is essential to your performance on the field. For the day before tryouts, make sure you are consuming a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Hydrate well by drinking plenty of water and avoiding sugary drinks.
Dress Appropriately👕
Many teams have a designated color they want players to wear to tryouts. Read over the information and make sure you have what you need. Then double check your bag is ready with your cleats, shin guards, and goalie gloves (if needed).
Arrive Early🕰️
If you are asked to arrive 30 minutes before the start time of the tryouts, aim for an extra 10-15 minutes on top of that. This will allow you to do some deep breathing, shake off some nerves, and will allow you plenty of time to settle in. Maybe chat with another player to start creating a connection and settle your nerves. Run through your warmup just to be sure you are ready to go and not dependent on what the other players are doing.
Show Your Skills🏃
During the tryouts, show off your skills confidently. Be aggressive, communicate with the other players, and show your soccer knowledge. Show your versatility and play different positions. Remember to be a team player.
Stay Positive😀
Even if you do not make the team, it is not the end of the world. Stay positive, learn from the experience, and continue working on your skills. There will be other opportunities to play soccer and to be a part of another team.
Preparing for soccer tryouts requires dedication, hard work, and the right mindset.🧠
Don’t spend the day before tryouts eating a bunch of garbage and drinking soda.🥤 Your body will not be ready for an intense workout.
Rest, relax, and play the game you love. Everything will work out.

Drill of the week
Start in a tall standing position with your feet together. Grab your right leg at the foot and pull the leg behind you into your butt. While holding your right leg back, balance on the left leg. Bend at the hips and left knee and slowly lean your body forward to a spot that is comfortable for you. Hold for a few seconds before returning to a tall position and relaxing your right leg into the ground.
